Question of the Week #6

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Port-au-prince about 5 days in Haiti. Although the earthquake was only a minute long it managed to kill thousands and destroy numerous buildings. Haiti is one least developed countries in the world and in recent years has been struggling with various crisis like healthcare, annual hurricanes, and severe environment degration. This country is disputably the poorest country on the west coast with approximatley four out of five living in poverty. Environmental degration, like deforestation and unarable land, has left the country looking for a better way of obtaining food. The earthquake has made Haiti looking for help with the capital almost completely destroyed. This was the worst earthquake in about 200 years and a predicted 50,000 or more are dead from this tragity.

  1. I also wrote about haiti this week. The magnitude of the earthquake has really been devestating to this country, especially considering they probably are one of the poorest countries in the west. Because they are so undeveloped the earthquake has really hit them harder than it would in other places.

  2. 200,000 people are estimated dead in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the thing that bothers me most is how inefficient the aid to this devastated country is. Help needs to arrive FAST. Obviously it takes some time to get supplies together, but wealthy countries like the US that are less than 200 miles from this island should not be arriving in force 7 days after the earthquake. If they had been there 2 days after the quake, thousands of lives would have been saved. Frustrating beyond belief for me, and I'm not even affected by this earthquake, I can't imagine how awful it must be for the people of Haiti.
